Effects = mini-quests
« on: August 06, 2008, 01:22:36 am »
From the other thread:

Quote
There's a project I've been meaning to get to since I first started playing again, and there's a way multiple people could help with it without totally ruining the game experience.....

I'd like to implement a quest, ranging from mindnumbingly simple to majorly time-consuming, one for each 'effect' in the game.  I'd have them start randomly at any place that you can accept a quest, so you'd have to have the effect 'on' and visit the places, some of them wouldn't be unlocked without doing others first, so there'd be some progression but with the nice touch of it being a unique experience for each player.  Depending on what effect you have 'on' and where you'd be doing them in a totally different order than other players.

I can make a thread with a list of all the effects and people who don't want to officially be developers could still make suggestions that tie in with the effect for a quest to match, via PM so that it'd still be a surprise for other players.  As a quest is made I can mark it as such in the thread.

There'd be a rule that whoever created the quest shouldn't update the Wiki regarding that quest, as I'm sure people would eventually be able to know where to go to trigger each quest.

Non-developers wouldn't know where the quest would be triggered, so it'd hopefully still be fun to find it.

If this sounds like something you'd be interested in pitching in on, either creating one quest or twenty, post so I know what kind of interest there is.

Min requirements for Quest suggestions:

Kill/collect which monster/item and quantity?
Reward/Result

The point would be to somehow creatively tie in the quest kills or collections to the effect.  If it's an obvious tie in then the text to go with the quest would be rather generic.

For example, for the effect Painted Blue:

Ah, I see you're feeling blue today, why don't you go collect 20 yellow dye and bring them to me?

The 'reward' then could be Green Dye.

If the link between the effect and the kill/collect isn't obvious a bit of suggested text from you would be nice to help players 'get it'

At this point I want to keep it to the items we already have ingame, there are at least 2 dozen I've made already and never 'introduced' since time slipped away, so those will be used though.

If we breezed through implementing these I think it would keep the game a bit more fun for the player base while hopefully a couple devotees can work on implementing some of what Dorotea had in mind before her passing.  That is something I won't rush or do 1/2 way, and I've hesitated to even attempt.

As I was getting together the list of effects it occurs to me that even just listing them all publicly is something of a 'spoiler' so I'm going to instead ask that people post and let me know if they're interested and I'll send 5 effects to you, if you find it interesting, I'll send 5, 10, 20, depending on you, more.

I can keep track of which ones haven't been 'assigned' this way and we'll maintain some of the secrecy, especially for players who aren't taking part who might feel like the game was in any way compromised by seeing some of the names.

I totally and completely suck.  I haven't yet implemented the quests some of the players helped me with. :(  I'd like to blame dmo for not getting a chance to change the quest input area and streamlining it for me...but he's been busy too.

We're going to work tomorrow on changing how quests are input and then, with luck, I'll be able to breeze through adding a TON of new quests.

I apologize for the delay on my end, real life has thrown some curve balls.

Anyone with a quest suggestion or a previous quest that they really liked that they'd like to see again, or slightly modified, feel free to PM me on the forums, in game or IM me. :)

Happy Holidays.  One way or another there WILL be a Holiday Quest, even if I spend Christmas Eve making it!

Okay folks, there are a handful of the new Effect based quests in place.  Unlocked by different effects they're located in various buildings you're already familiar with, more on the way.

There's a small Crinkle Quest in play also, with more planned throughout the end of the year.  Nothing as big and bold as previously, as we're busy on a number of other changes to the game, but we haven't forgotten you all.
